Controversy regarding Medtronic Lead Fracture (Sprint Fidelis Lead)

We received notification from Medtronic, Inc. that an implanted lead with defribillators has met with some controversy.  The distribution of the Sprint Fidelis lead is being voluntarily suspended by Medtronic due to reported lead fractures.  This means that this lead could fail to deliver a shock, deliver an inappropriate shock or cause loss of pacing (if you have a pacing device).  They are not recommending explanting or replacing these leads at this point, but we will be very vigilant to keep a close eye on them.  According to Medtronic, this lead still carries a 97.7% success rate at 30 months.  Medtronic has recommended that we reprogram your device so as to optimize effectiveness of the device and it's alert system.  For more information you may go to www.medtronic.com.  As always, please do not hesitate to call our pacemaker/defibrillator clinic with any questions or concerns.
